Artist Interview - Gross Misconduct

Gross Misconduct, four musicians standing on stage in red hazy light, in front of a silhouetted crowd, cheering

Support the Scene is back and ready to introduce you to some of the amazing local talent we have here, and to reacquaint you with some of your favourites. We have such an incredible music scene here in the GVA, and there are so many amazing artists just waiting for you to check them out. So, after an intensely hot and busy summer, some of our talented local artists found time to answer a few of our questions.

Check out what the drummer, John Kurucz, of Gross Misconduct had to say!

Q: For those who don’t know you, can you please introduce yourself and describe your sound?

We are Gross Misconduct, a four-piece metal band originally from Vancouver Island.

We’ve been around since 1999, moved to Vancouver in 2003 and have been actively gigging/releasing music ever since. We have three albums out: The Process of Indoctrination (2007); The Disconnect (2011); and Equinox (2018). We will be releasing new material at some point in 2025.

Our influences are all over the place, but elements of death, thrash and progressive metal are the most prominent in our sound. Think latter-era Death, The Crown and old school Metallica with smatterings of more progressive bands like Martyr, Cynic, Mastodon etc.

Q: What’s one of the biggest successes you’ve had as a musician?

The fact that we are still a band 25 years after our inception. We have seen so many of the bands we used to gig with cease to exist for any number of reasons – sometimes life gets in the way, sometimes these bands have gotten in the way of themselves. The fact that we are still doing this is a testament to our dedication to our music and to each other.

Q: What’s your favourite venue to play?

The Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver stands out. There is plenty of room on stage, the venue staff are great, there is a band room to warm up in and plenty of space to store gear. And we have been able to share the stage with some phenomenal bands in that venue, like At the Gates, Napalm Death, Dark Tranquility and the list goes on.

Q: What do you think was the best Medium for music to be on? (Vinyl, Tape, CD, Digital)?

I can’t remember the last time I listened to music in any other format besides digital. That’s not to say I have a real preference per se, but that’s just life in 2024.

Q: Who is your favourite local band to see perform around town?

Let’s take a trip down memory lane here (most of these bands no longer exist): Sinned, Galgamex, Abuse, The Hallowed Catharsis, Mvlgrave, Neck of the Woods, Expain, Muspellheim, Nylithia, The Golers, Blackwater Burial. I’m sure I’m forgetting some bands here.

Q: What’s coming up next for your music?

We’ll be playing three shows to celebrate our 25th anniversary:

Oct. 25 at the Rickshaw in Vancouver with Neck of the Woods, Mvlgrave and Blackwater Burial Nov. 1 at the Globe in Nanaimo with Neck of the Woods, Torrefy and Yegg Nov. 2 at Lucky Bar in Victoria with Neck of the Woods and Torrefy.

Beyond these gigs we are actively writing new material. At this point we have enough material for a full album and then some. We will begin piecing it all together in late 2024 and release a new album in 2025.
